On May 14, 1956, the North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church approved a petition from the people of Rocky Mount to establish North Carolina Wesleyan College, named in honor of Methodism’s founders, John and Charles Wesley. The College was officially chartered on October 25, 1956 and celebrated its first commencement in 1964, awarding degrees to thirty-three students.
Over the last six decades, nearly 9,000 students have earned bachelor’s degrees in the arts, sciences and various professions. The remarkable successes and ongoing support from local alumni, neighboring communities, numerous states and many foreign countries, affirms Wesleyan’s value as one of the most important institutions of higher education in eastern North Carolina.
In 1976, the College established what is now the Adult and Professional Studies (APS) program, a unique program dedicated to giving aspiring people of our region access to higher education with flexible formats of study for working adults. In 2015, the College set out to establish its first two masters programs, and in April 2022, the NC Wesleyan College Board of Trustees announced plans for the College to become North Carolina Wesleyan University.
Becoming a university is a highly visible expression of the power of a Wesleyan education for our students and our community. We will continue to advance our educational mission, offering additional academic opportunities for a more diverse community of students and to build the foundation for a new era of growth in our region. North Carolina Wesleyan remains committed to the hallmarks that have long-defined our institution, providing students with one-on-one mentoring opportunities, hands-on experiences with full-time faculty members, research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and career exploration that focuses on producing engaged professionals and civic leaders. Our vision is expanding. Our purpose is unchanging: Personal, Practical and Purpose-Driven Education.
